Every week, FareShare Yorkshire rescues good food that would otherwise go to waste and redirects it to where it’s needed most. From short shelf lives and packaging errors to overproduction and quality control rejections, surplus food arises every single hour across the whole supply chain. Instead of being thrown away, we collect, sort, and deliver it to frontline charities and community groups across the region.
Thanks to this work, we now support an average of 44,000 people each week through more than 570 food sites. In the past year alone, we redistributed 2,270 tonnes of surplus food to 386 organisations – equivalent to over 100,000 meals every week. The retail value of this food exceeded £7.9 million, a level of support that many lifeline charities could never otherwise afford.
Rising Need in 2026
The coming year is shaping up to be the hardest in our 26‑year history. We are being called upon to source, collect, pick, pack, and deliver enough surplus food to provide 6 million meals – equivalent to over £9 million worth of food – to Yorkshire’s Third Sector for the very first time.
Over 400 organisations now rely on us, from hospices and refuges to children’s projects and busy community kitchens. Demand is rising, while food companies are tightening waste reduction measures, making redistribution more complex and costly.
How You Can Help
This Christmas, we are running a match‑funding campaign between 2–9 December. Every pound donated during this window will be doubled, helping us intercept record amounts of surplus food for charities and community groups across Yorkshire.
We are asking supporters to consider gifts that will keep our vans on the road and our warehouses full of nutritious food. For example:
£10 could deliver enough food for 50 meals.
£30 could enable a refrigerated van to deliver 1 tonne of food across 8 charities
£50 could kit a volunteer with the Personal Protective Equipment they need to pick and pack surplus.
£70 could deliver enough food for 350 meals
Together, we can make this Christmas a launchpad for the most impactful year in our history – ensuring dignity, stability, and hope for people across Yorkshire.
Our match-funding campaign pages goes live at midday on Tuesday 2nd December – please watch out for this on our website, Linkedin page and social media pages.
