Ravenscliffe Community Association- “FareShare Yorkshire not only help our community centre, but they help to avoid food wastage.”

Danielle Chamberlain, Café Kitchen Worker at The Gateway Centre (Ravenscliffe Community Association) has been with the centre for 5 years.

“We receive a variety of food from FareShare Yorkshire, including fruit, vegetables, drinks, snacks and even meat & dairy alternatives. We also receive frozen deliveries every 2 weeks. Once we receive food, we check all the dates so that we can prioritise what needs to be used first. The café uses the food to cook hot meals for our service users.

“One of the highlights of being a CFM is our community being able to get a hot, delicious meal served to them. This is something we wouldn’t be able to do without FareShare Yorkshire’s support and many of the members appreciate it and are thankful that the café is there. FareShare Yorkshire help us to limit how much we need to spend on food during the week, which helps our community centre and avoids food wastage.”

We asked Danielle about the benefits of being a CFM.

“The benefits are not just for ourselves, but for the whole world. So much food is thrown away each day and with our membership we are limiting the amount that is thrown away by turning it into a tasty meal for families that need it. It’s always a lovely surprise on delivery day to see what food we get too.

“We want to say a big thank you to the staff, volunteers and everyone behind the scenes for doing such an amazing job. We appreciate everything that we receive and YOU keep our community café up and running, so thank you!”

270,000 tonnes of perfectly edible food gets wasted by the food industry each year.

That’s enough for nearly 650,000,000 meals
