Award nomination for volunteer Josh

A volunteer at the FareShare Yorkshire Barnsley site has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

Josh, who dedicates almost every day of the week to volunteering at our Barnsley site, has been nominated in the Volunteer of the Year category by Head of Development, Jonathan Williams.

Josh began his FareShare Yorkshire journey in 2018, as suggested by The Princes Trust, to build his confidence. During his time here, Josh has spent time out on the vans making vital deliveries to community food members, as well as picking and packing surplus food orders in our Wombwell-based warehouse. He has also completed our in-house forklift permit training programme and is a huge source of support to his fellow volunteers.

Jonathan Williams is immensely proud of Josh’s progress.

“Josh never seeks any credit for the work he does, most of which is behind closed doors at our Wombwell centre. He has grown so much in confidence that he now often leads whole teams of seven to ten guest volunteers when he is with us.”

He went on to express his gratitude for Josh’s hard work.

“He is a kind, gentle and generous person who supports everyone on site, whether it’s unloading pallets of food from a lorry, picking and packing orders for charities or delivering surplus into the kitchens of frontline projects.

“Through the pandemic Josh was tireless in providing cover for ill colleagues when we had to double our output with no notice. There have honestly been a lot of days when we could not have readied every charity order without him. On average 15,000 people across South Yorkshire benefit each week because of Josh’s efforts and we are so proud of him.”

Josh says he is happy to be a part of the FareShare family.

“I feel proud to be nominated, the volunteering has really helped me. I am now a lot more confident and I feel like part of the family at FareShare Yorkshire which has made a big difference to me.”
